Add Layer Style Inner and Gradient Overlay.

Step 44

Make new layer above the eraser. Paint pen shadow on the eraser using soft brush.

Step 45

Use Zoom tool to see details on the eraser. Draw some subtle highlights using 1 px brush.

Step 46

Our current pen has no proper lighting. So, let’s add one. Our light source is located on top right of the pen. Activate brush tool and paint highlight on the pen.

Step 47: Pen Tip

Draw a small black rectangle on top of the pen. Make new layer and then paint a small highlight on the tip using 1 px brush.

Step 48: Shadow

Remember that our pen is located in a group layer with layer mask. We made the group layer in Step 35. Now, we need to make pen shadow outside the group layer. Ctrl-click pen path to convert it to selection. Press left arrow key a few times to move the selection. Make new layer and place it under pen group layer. Fill selection with black. Remove selection using shortcut Ctrl + D or click Select > Deselect.

Step 49

Click Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur to soften the shadow.

Step 50

Activate Eraser tool and set its Hardness to 0%. Erase top and bottom part of the shadow to make it realistic.

Step 51

We’ve done drawing the pen. Let’s bring back the pad.

Step 52: Rotating the Pen.

let’s rotate our pen position to make it natural. Activate pen shadow layer and pen group layer. Hit Ctrl + T to perform transformation. Drag outside the transformation frame to rotate the pen.

Free images and clip art are great to find. After all, they allow you to make use of other’s work without paying a single penny. Unfortunately, just because something is free does not mean that it is Copyright-free. See, Copyright-free (often referred to as public domain) images and clip art are those that can be used under any circumstance. They can be used for personal projects or commercial endeavors. They can be kept as is or modified to your hearts content. All of this can be done, legally, without any form of attribution. In other words, if you use a public domain clip art image in a commercial project, you need not contact its author to ask for permission.

So, without further ado, here are some of the best copyright-free (public domain) clip art image sites on the net today.

The Open Clip Art Library is probably the largest public domain clip art site out there. They currently host over 34,000 clip art images, with hundreds more being added each month. Most clip art images hosted on the Open Clip Art Library can be found in both PNG and SVG formats. Furthermore, the site allows you to either download single images or large packages of images. At one point in time, searching for particular clip art was a weak point of this web site. However, recently, they have added the ability to view pictures by category.

Clker.com is another great place to find public domain clip art images (as well as a reasonable array of stock photos). Unlike the Open Clip Art Library, you can not download huge packages of clip art images from Clker. However, Clker’s easy to use interface allows you to find the pictures you desire with relative ease. Once again, images are most often available in PNG and SVG formats.

WP Clipart is a mixture of public domain clip art and stock photo images which are nicely organized (using a multi-level hierarchy). Unlike the two sites mentioned above, WP Clipart images tend to be only available in PNG format. However, it does have a neat feature where it can automatically convert a picture to JPG.

If you do not wish to search for images using the web interface, you are free to download the entire archive as well as use the author’s specially created image viewer. The image viewer, although simple, allows you to perform a few simple operations quite easily, including: rotation, and simple color manipulation.

Public Domain Clip Art is a simple, no-frills, site which allows you to browse for a public domain clip art images according to a wide variety of categories. It also comes with a search function, allowing you to find an image according to a particular description. Images on Public Domain Clip Art are available in PNG format.

Keith hosts a blog where he discusses a variety of Vancouver computer repair topics including how to retrieve a forgotten Window’s password.

In my post the other day on Finding Images on the Internet, I led with a photo collage. Also the heading on today’s post is another photo collage. To get these graphics I first tried searching google images and some stock photo sites for a while, but I couldn’t find what I wanted. Further searching led me to a pretty cool website called Shape Collage. They let you build your own photo collages for free.

I just added some of their recommended image source sites into the text box and selected the square shape. Then I clicked “Create” and voila! The two images today are “PVM” and “MAX”. These were created by selecting the “Text” option instead of the square shape.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/tags/nature/interesting

http://www.google.com/images?q=cats

http://www.time.com/time/graphics

Put a space between the letters of the text for better results, “P V M”. I guess the “M” letter comes out a little weird, but overall it looks pretty good.

There are three sites I have run across which have a large amount of graphics available for free download. While searching through google image search can yield decent results, depending on what you’re looking for it can be more trouble than its worth.

Stock.xchng – This is a site for free stock photos. While stock.xchng doesn’t have the largest selection of stock photos, you definitely get more than you pay for. Interestingly enough, stock.xchng is owned by the same folks who own iStockPhoto. You might be wondering why they would offer these images for free, but I think it is good marketing. Alongside the free results, iStockPhoto’s more extensive collection is shown. This probably drives more sales than you would think.

OfficialPSDs – This site is a solution to every graphic designer’s problem. The foregrounds of many images have already been cut out for you and saved as a PSD. This can save you countless hours spent with the lasso tool in PhotoShop. Need some fire graphics for a page you’re designing? A quick search yielded a boatload of results all completely cut out from the background. There are many different types of images on the site, but celebrity images seem to be the most common.

PlanetRenders – This site is very similar to OfficialPSDs. All the images have been cut from the background, except they are saved in PNG format rather than PSD. If you need some cut graphics to design a fan site or convention flyer, this is the spot. There is a wide selection of video games, anime, TV/movie, and fantasy graphics. There’s also quite a lot of fractal renders if you need to add an effect to your background designs.

One thing to keep in mind however with free graphic sites is that sometimes pictures will get uploaded that are not free to use because of copyrights. It is difficult for a site to police all of its submissions, and you should always be careful.

Photoshop is a very useful program. Some of you might know it as an image editor. Well that’s true, 5 years ago! Earlier version of Photoshop is so powerful that you can create almost anything with it. I do a lot of icon designing lately and it’s all done in Photoshop. The advantage of using Photoshop to create icon is you can combine pixel painting with Photoshop’s vector tool. This tutorial show us how easy it is creating a magnifying glass icon in Photoshop.

Just A Preview Of What Our Efforts Will Produce

Take a look at the icon we will be created in this tutorial.

Step 9

Duplicate handle shape that we created earlier and move it to the top of the layer. Remove its layer style and make sure its color is black.Select points on top and move the down until its size is very small. Change its layer’s opacity to 40%.

We’ve done creating the handle. Make sure you put all the layers inside the handle group.

Draw a circle shape.

Step 11

We need to modify circle we just created to a ring shape. Select the circle path. Copy and paste the path, downsize it, and from option bar select subtract.

Step 12

Add these layer style.

Step 13

Using same steps we did earlier, draw smaller ring. Add white Color Overlay.

Step 14

Activate direct selection tool and modify some points in smaller circle to create a crescent moon shape.

Step 15

Add layer mask and paint black part indicated below.

Step 16

Again, draw another reflection on the opposite side.

Step 17: Drawing Glass

Draw circle shape. From layers panel change fill to 0% and add Inner Glow.

Step 18

Create a crescent shape by drawing two overlapping circle shape with subtract selected in option bar. Make sure the shape’s color is black and change its opacity to 10%.

Step 19

Draw white shape like you see below. Change its opacity to 10%. Now, this shape is almost negligible but it adds what some people call pixel perfect.

Step 20

Create new layer and paint few white dots. Change layer’s opacity to 20%. Again, this is another pixel perfect.

Step 21: Convert Icon to Smart Object

Right click magnify glass group and choose Convert to Smart Object. That’s it we’re done. You can stop here if you want, but I’ll continue adding some steps to add more realism to the icon.

Step 22

Hit ctrl+T and rotate our icon.

Step 23

Let’s add a picture into the scene to see how the magnify works. Here, I use a screenshot from my firefox.

Step 24

This is not flying magnify glass! We need to add shadow on the floor. Create new layer under the icon and paint black using low opacity brush.

Step 25

Paint smaller black dot using higher opacity brush on place where icon touch the floor.

Step 26

Now create selection for icon’s shadow on the picture. Fill it with black then deselect (ctrl+D).

Step 27

Soften the shadow by adding Gaussian Blur. Add layer mask and paint furthest shadow with black to hide it.

Step 28

Using ellips marquee tool, select picture inside the glass. Clik Filter > Distort > Pinch. Use minus size to make the picture bulge.

Step 29

Almost forget, create elliptical selection under the picture and fill it with black.

Step 30

Deselect (ctrl+D) and click Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur.

Conclusion

We have just create an icon using only Photoshop. As you can see we combine vector and pixel painting here. I hope you like the tutorial and learn one or two new techniques. If you are following this tutorial, let us know the result. Put the link in the comment below, I would love to see it!

One of the first things that influences the human mind for decoding a message is the color. From red, to green, to blue every color evokes sensations, emotions and hidden meanings that our brain decodes, providing a particular information to us.
Below a short introduction from AboutLogoDesign.com about the color psychology, to understand better what we want to say.

“Of all the forms of non-verbal communication, color is the most instantaneous method of conveying messages and meanings. Among other uses, color stimulates and works synergistically with all of the senses, symbolizes abstract concepts and thoughts, expresses fantasy or wish fulfillment, recalls another time or place and produces an aesthetic or emotional response.

[...]

Much of the human reaction to color is subliminal and consumers are generally unaware of the pervasive and persuasive effects of color. Psychological effect is instantaneous as color stimulates the senses and exerts its power of suggestion. The power that color wields is seen at every level of communication: in corporate identification and logos, signage, advertising on television, billboards, in print media and packaging, on the computer and at point-of-purchase.”

SOURCE: Logo Design Color Psychology

It’s evident the importance of the color, and of its combinations, when we want to communicate a precise message.
In this collection, I have selected 50 creative logos which use the colors effectively and cleverly. Take a look!
