They grabbed quite a lot of attention by signing up 200,000 users in just two days. Recently, I stumbled onto this post by the landing page designer about how he designed the CodeYear landing page. I think the key takeaways here are to focus on simplicity and what you want the visitor to do. Enjoy!

If you want maximum search engine traffic you need to make sure all your content is indexed by the search engines. Follow these tips below and you will not only improve your site, but you will also improve indexing and traffic gains over the long-term.

1. Create a breadcrumb trail – Not only are these great for improving usability, but they also add structure to your site and help search engines find deep content.

2. Add 3-5 related posts at the end of individual posts – This is possibly the best way to make sure all your content is found. Usually related posts are grouped via tags.

3. Create manual deeplinks to old posts in any new post – Deeplinking using descriptive anchor text not only improves indexing, but can increase your search engine rankings for the keywords used.

4. Create roudnup posts of your best content – Sometimes the best way to keep old content fresh is to create a roundup post of your old posts. This helps search engines and new visitors find new things to read.

5. Post your content to social sites – Always post your content to sites such as Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn and have social sharing buttons on your site.

6. Add popular posts in the sidebar that change monthly – This is a good way to tell search engines which content on your site is most important and can give those posts more authority in the rankings.

7. Make sure your category links are prominent – Always have direct links to your category pages in a prominent location on every page.

8. Use a consistent navigation on all pages – Good site structure is the foundation of making your site more search engine friendly. If users can’t easily navigate, search engine spiders won’t be able to either.

9. Create an html and xml sitemap – This is easy to do and a very good way to help search engines find all your pages. Submit your xml sitemap via Google Webmaster Tools.

10. Link to your sitemap and other important pages in your footer – Linking to your HTML sitemap not only helps visitors navigate if lost, but it helps search engines understand your site hierarchy.

11. Add content on a regular basis – Fresh content means fresh indexing. Search engines always want new content so if they see your site has great content on a regular basis, they will want to crawl it more often.

12. Validate your website’s code – Again, a search engine friendly site must start with good coding. Validate your site’s code and always follow the latest web standards.

13. Redirect any broken links – Broken links are bad for business. With them, you are often wasting linkjuice, losing visitors and hurting your rankings. 301 redirect any broken links to their new locations.

14. Check Google Webmaster Tools for crawl errors – This tool is your best friend. Look here for any crawling issues that could seriously be affecting your website.

15. Get backlinks to your home page and sub pages – An easy way to get your site fully indexed is to get some natural backlinks from sites that are already being crawled often. Don’t just look for links to your home page, look for links to sub pages as well.

Make these changes and your website will be a search engine spider’s best friend!

I tried it myself, and it is enterprisingly easy to find just about anybody’s name on a cake photo. Today is actually my birthday. Here’s my cake!

This one is a pretty cool cake, but it’s hard to see my name on it.

I think this was pretty ingenious on their part. First, it distracts the users from the fact that they can’t actually use their favorite website at the moment. Second, it has provided quite a bit of what I call “meme marketing” for twitter. You can find people mimicing the fail whale image all over the internet. As we all know there is no such thing as bad publicity, so even though the whale highlights some shortcomings of twitter, I still see that as a good thing. Here’s some examples from around the internet of others’ takes on the fail whale.

Let’s face it, many of us are either skilled at design or skilled at coding, but only the rare individual is talented at both. If you are a coder or a designer, outsourcing provides a way to focus on your strength and pass along the other half of the work to someone else. Here’s my quick and dirty guide to outsourcing. You have to be careful to find the right guy for the job.

What can be outsourced?

Well just about anything people need on the web.

Programming

Game art

Logo design

Icon design

Illustration

Website design

Website programming

Website Search Engine Optimization

Press Release writing

I was surprised to find how many people are outsourcing their written content. But it makes sense. Any time you can find a specialist to do something for you, it is possible to leverage their talent to get your whole project done faster or better.

Writing a Proposal

The more time you spend thinking about and writing your project requirements the more time you’ll save yourself down the road. A lot of the people you will be hiring speak English as a second language, so you’ll need to be as clear and concise as you can.

Some things to include in your project document:

Proposed timeframe: Keep in mind that you’ll need to add some time here to get their first versions corrected.

Deliverables list: I like to organize my projects into milestones as much as possible. This lets you know progress is being made and allows for greater control of corrections along the way.

Resources list: What resources will you give the provider? This might be existing code, existing art, sample data files, etc.

Technical requirements: What programming language must be used? Which colors to use? What web framework should your site be built on?

Comparables: Give the provider some references to other work that might be similar to what you are looking for. The closer comparable you can find the more happy you’ll be with the finished product.

One thing I like to include in a project description is a simple reading comprehension test. At the end of my description I’ll ask the provider to put a word like “oranges” or “blackberries” in their response. That way I can easily filter out people who have actually read my project and those who are just responding to every project en masse.

Selecting a Provider

It is important to not simply select the cheapest bid. Although it may be tempting you can easily spend three times as much time as you wanted by hassling with bad work and not getting what you want. Try to communicate via IM or skype with the potential providers and who ever impresses you the most with their communication and understanding of what you want is a good bet.

Rule #1

The first rule of outsourcing is never pay upfront. If you do, it is unlikely you will see that money again whether you are happy with the work or not. The best freelance websites like guru.com and elance.com both offer escrow payment services, so your provider will know you are serious about paying before beginning work. Then when a milestone has been completed you can release some of the payment.

One Last Tip

Another idea that I have used is to create a small cheap task that is part of your overall goal. Clearly define it and outsource it. You should select something significant, but not too expensive. Target a project of $100-$200. Then award that project to several providers. Whoever meets your needs in the best way will be a good candidate to choose for the larger project you have in mind.

Good luck outsourcing.

This post is for those who're looking for a low-cost variant of creating a Flash website. Here you'll find a personal experience in Flash developing. So, join me in this experiment!

Hello there! This post is for those who’re looking for a low-cost variant of creating a
Flash website. There are a few situations when this article will be of a great use to you:

- you don’t have time (money, patience, will, etc) to hire a professional web developer to build a Flash website of your dreams;
- you don’t like web developers at all (or you are afraid of them because of a bad experience in the past);
- you want to create a Flash website without any external help but you are not sure that your skills and knowledge are good enough;
- you are a geeky developer and you have hundreds of orders from premium clients for website creation but you can’t do everything at once.

So, I want to share my experience in Flash developing with you. You probably heard a lot about MotoCMS company, but you’ve never tried their products yourself. Besides, the free 30-days demo version of professional Flash CMS is a cogent argument to start working.

Among the variety of Flash templates I chose the theme #33054 which looked rather attractive with a splendid photo gallery – it was a perfect variant for my purposes. By the way, did I say that I was going to create a website for a tour firm?

After a short registration I received an email with the demo access data and the link where I could find my template. And the MotoCMS admin panel is at my disposal.

Even on the screenshot you can see many useful tabs and buttons which will help you to create Flash website without any troubles (you should definitely try all of them yourself). If you don’t mind I won’t describe all those functions as you can have a good look at them any time. I’ll go into details on some features only.

I appreciate the template’s look greatly but I want to have a unique Flash photo gallery so, I need to do some customizations. The first thing that I start working with is the background – I want it to be green. You know, green is a very lovely color. It always associates with new life and fresh emotions. And after a few minutes of googling I found an amazing light-green background (if you want to do the same, make sure that your image is in a .jpg formant).

To upload a new image to the Media Library click once on the background and the Background Image Slot is ready to serve you.

A double click will open the Media Library with all your photos, videos and sound items.

And the Media button on the upper left corner of the window will help you to upload all necessary materials in a matter of seconds. It sounds fantastic but, believe me, it’s true! The next double click on the uploaded picture will set it as a background on every template’s page.

But now blue pictures’ frames on the green background don’t look good so, I want to do something about it. Checking my pictures one by one I change image properties in the Splash Button Slot located on the right of the template. There is a Blend Mode drop-down tab. What I like most of all are the Darken and Multiply parameters, so I choose them.

And one more thing, I’d like to change an order of displaying sub-galleries’ pictures on the Splash page. For this I just need to drag and drop these images to wherever I want. Also there is an opportunity to re-size and rotate images.

Giving the final touch to my Splash page I decided to change the title. It was as easy as ABC. A double click on the title section displays the Company Name Slot, that’s where you choose the label you want to modify and write whatever you want!

Now you can easily work with other website pages. Double click and drag-and-drop principles perfectly work with every template’s element and on every page, so I think you’ll have no troubles. You can choose the page to work with through the top menu panel or with the Current Section tab.

You can also easily manage the Contact form of your Flash CMS template. Open the Form widget with a double click (or through the menu panel) and arrange the form fields or press the Configuration button for more details.

There are several blue navigation buttons on different template’s pages which should be made green like the background is. I offer you to select the button with the mouse pointer and then click the Content Part Color tab on the right panel. By shifting left and right scrolling bars you’ll be able to choose the right hue, saturation, contrast, brightness and so on.

By the way, this stunning and professional Flash CMS allows you to edit control panel and website preferences. It is well known that Flash websites are very attractive but they are very hard to promote. From now on your interactive content is easily arranged for search engine bots crawling. So, SEO-friendly settings of all Moto Flash templates will definitely please you. Frankly speaking, when I saw that every Flash page has its own URL and can be indexed by search engines I was totally amazed too.

And the last note: don’t forget to press the Compress button before logging out of your admin panel. It will save your time and secure your XML files from errors while saving the template’s modifications.

And now I’m ready to present you my lovely Flash website which was made by myself in two hours. After everything was done all I needed were some good texts to run the website up.

At the very end of my review I’d like to say that Flash templates with the Moto content management system appear to be very convenient and user-friendly. I didn’t have any substantial problems while working with this system. It is a perfect chance to create a magnificent flash website without extra efforts and frustrations. So why wouldn’t you try it?!

Today I got a notice of a new stock image website, StockFresh. This site was started by the same group of founders who started stock.xchng and Stockxpert. I am a big fan of stock.xchng so I am sure StockFresh will live up to expectations.

I grabbed a few images from their website to post here:

As you can see from the photos above, stockfresh offers more than just stock photos. There are many vectors and graphics available too.

If you’re a photographer, stockfresh is a pretty good deal. They are offering 50% commissions on photos sold which compares favorably to the rest of the industry. I have always wanted to try to get serious about stock photography. It is interesting that there are a few full time stock photographers and it’s always nice to have a few extra dollars rolling in each month after selling a photo. As a buyer, it is nice to know that a high percentage payout is going to the creators.

StockFresh’s image prices are in line with what other photo sites are charging. For small images, the price is $1 and it goes up from there.

That looks refreshing. From what I have seen the quality of these images is great. It is clear that many of the photos are created by a professional studio.

If you’re interested in seeing more of their images or vectors, visit www.stockfresh.com. Also for more information check out Twitter or Facebook.
