Perhaps now more than any other time since the first version of Mosaic was released in 1993 is the height of competitiveness in the browser market. I’ve read several recent articles about competition amongst browsers to win over new users. Microsoft, Google, Safari and Firefox have all made a serious impact in the market. For us web designers, this has both positive and negative implications. On one hand, the increased competition should push new capabilities to market faster than ever. The splintered market however, will just make it that much more difficult to get your site working with each new version. Not only that, but we also have to worry about the mobile versions of all these browsers. Here’s where we stand today:

Firefox, Chrome, and Safari have all made market share gains at the expense of internet explorer. The browser companies made very little money the first 10 years of the internet. Search has changed all that. Now the stakes are higher because who ever controls the browser has a chance to snag your search traffic and the ad revenues that come along with that. Not surprisingly, Google Chrome has proven to be particularly adept at doing this. With Chrome, you don’t even have to type in a URL. Just enter your keywords in the address bar, and the search results start popping up.

Probably the biggest challenge to developers over the years has been Internet Explorer. This was mainly caused by the inadequate support of CSS2 by IE6 and IE7. The good news is, according to Quirksmode, IE8 and IE9 have addressed and fixed this problem. The bad news though is that there are still a truckload of users who still haven’t upgraded to these newer versions of IE. That means to really put your site through its paces, you’re going to have to test it in some of the older versions of these browsers too. For a blog or entertainment site, thats not such a big deal, but if you’re developing a site for an enterprise where customer service is a top priority creating a fully compatible website may be prudent.

As for HTML5, a quick consultation with wikipedia shows that webkit seems to have the broadest support for the emerging standard. Webkit is of course the engine behind Safari and Chrome. Did you know the HTML5 standard still hasn’t been completely ratified? If you’re like me you’ve been wondering, “What in the hell is taking so long?” I think Joe Hewitt, one of the developers for Facebook, has a good take on this topic in a recent article on Techcrunch. Definitely click through and give that a read. I learned a lot. Joe basically says that native mobile app platforms have out-competed the web in features. The reason for this is because of the sluggish standards process. By trying to have all the browsers display the same code in the same way, a lot in terms of functionality has been given up. For this reason, some of us may turn into mobile app developers over the next few years as opposed to web developers. Leave a comment below and give me your predictions?
